Do me a favor?

This is totally not related to homeschooling, but that's ok! My cousin Jason Harrod is entered into the Cover an American Classic by Neil Young contest! He is currently in 2nd place but deserves to be in 1st :)

If you click here, you can visit the site and listen to Jason's version of This Land is Your Land by  Neil Young. When you're done listening, make sure to vote for Jason! The first place winner will have a spot on Neil's website for an entire year!

We finally choose a cirriculum for kindergarten!

After months of praying and researching, and researching and praying, we finally picked a curriculum for Tyler's kindergarten year!

A couple of weeks ago, I went to the NCHE Conference in Winston Salem, NC. I learned so much while I was there. The book fair was amazing and it helped to actually be able to flip through the books.

While I was at the book fair, I stopped by the A Beka table because they were one of the top companies we were looking at. After a few trips to their table over 3 days, we picked their K5 Child Kit and their K5 Parent Kit (both in manuscript.)

I will say that at first we didn't think we'd go with a boxed kit like that. I wanted more flexibility since it was our first year. Then I started to think about the fact that I know nothing about being a teacher, and maybe having some big time help this first year would be a good idea. So that is why we ultimately went with the boxed kit for Kindergarten. Next year may be different when I have the hang of things. I will have the hang of things, won't I? :)

So I'm wondering if any of you have used A Beka in the past and what you thought of it.

More to come!

Homeschool Thoughts

Right now I feel really unsure as to what to do with Tyler this school year. To be honest, I haven't spent enough time in prayer about this specific thing. I will do better.

Do I start him on Kindergarten level because he's ready? Or do I spend this year doing unit themes and design the whole year myself? Although I really love the A Beka K5 kits, right now I think we're learning towards doing unit themes this first year. What's your experience?

He's a great learner. He has a pretty long attention span for his age (and gender!) I feel like he could go either route and be fine. But I'm the type of person who needs some flexibility.

Good thing we have around 4 months to get this figured out, though I don't want to wait until the very last minute.

Of course I appreciate any advice you seasoned homeschool Moms have for me!
